Play Therapy opens the door to the child’s world. In the child’s play, the Play Therapist is given a glimpse of the child’s thoughts, feelings, and desires. The relationship of the child, the child’s play, and the Play Therapist empowers the child to manage his/her world effectively.

JUST A CHILD

I’m just a child –
Not very big,
Not very smart;
You look tremendous to me!
Like a tree in a forest,
Like a skyscraper in town, towering –
But… I’m just a child.

Because I’m a child
I make mistakes;
Plenty of them.
You look perfect to me,
Like a god in heaven,
Like a judge in court, condemning –
But me … I’m just a child.

And since I’m a child,
I am trusting.
I accept you totally.
You tell me what to do,
How to act, what to think.
Like I’m taught to do.
I acquiesce, for I’m a good child.
Now I’m accepted
As the child I’m not.

Being just a child
Can be lonely,
Can be frightening.
I don’t always know what to expect from you.
Like a thunderous cloud,
Like a bolt of lightning
You strike … I’m scared, for I am
Only a child.

This little child
Needs assurance,
Needs acceptance.
I look at you and you’re not there.
